Holi is worldwide celebrated on the last full moon day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month. Holi is based on an ancient Hindu tradition; it represents the triumph of good over evil.
Holi, named after Holika, a night before Holi, people light a bonfire (the Holika is put to fire) and pray for any evil in their minds to be destroyed. On Phagwa, which is a national holiday, people splash each other with colors and dance at gatherings with their families and friends. Holi is also called Phagwa in Suriname. The colorful and vibrant Phagwa festival opens a window to the country’s soul, offering foreigners a unique way to connect with the multiethnic cultures Suriname has.
